From its beginning as a frontier town on the prairie to currently being one of the largest agricultural producing areas in Colorado, Akron has been a thriving community. Akron was founded in 1882 as a major stop on the Burlington Northern Railroad. That history is evident as you browse through the Washington County Museum, located in the old railroad depot.
Folks interested in recreation can enjoy the 9-hole Washington County Golf Course just south of Akron, the Akron Fishing Ponds, the Akron swimming pool, or one of several parks scattered throughout the town. Akron’s historic library beautifully combines the charm of a turn-of-the century building with all the services of a full service library in this computerized age.
Each September, a crowd of thousands from all across the U.S. gather in Akron for the National Radial Engine Exhibition at the Colorado Plains Regional Airport.
The Eastern Colorado Round-Up, held at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Akron, is one of the premier county fairs in northeast Colorado. The fair features a homegrown carnival, owned and operated by Washington County. Bring the family out July 27 through 31 and enjoy all the festivities.
Akron Plays Host to National Radial Engine Exhibition
The National Radial Engine Exhibition is a static display of radial engine aircraft from the 1920’s to the 1950’s held each September at the Colorado Plains Regional Airport in Akron. It features a 5K Fun Run and Walk to open the day, a muscle, antique and classic car show, a classic motorcycle show, radio controlled airplane exhibitions, model rocket displays by the Northern Colorado Rocket Club, numerous breathtaking aerobatics demonstrations, a heartpounding Wolrd War II reenactment, and of course some of the era’s most impressive airplanes!
This unique show allows the audiences to wander through a replica World War II Army camp and visit with the costumed reenactors, to go right up to the aircraft on static display and to rub shoulders with the pilots.
Bring your family and friends and spend the day visiting the many displays and the vendor booths that include food, crafts, aviation items, art, and more. Just remember to bring your lawn chair and sunscreen and sit back to enjoy the spectacular show. |
