Welcome to Southern Colorado’s Cuchara Valley, a delightfully undiscovered destination. Amidst nature’s great beauty you will find a refreshing small town quality of life combined with the sophistication of art galleries, theater, casual to fine dining, musical entertainment and shopping.
For recreation there is hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, camping and golfing. Who wouldn’t enjoy a mountain meadow picnic surrounded by Colorado Blue Spruce and Aspen, framing panoramic views? Accommodations range from the local inns, a hotel, motel, various RV parks, guest ranches to several charming bed and breakfast establishments. Looking for something different to do?
Besides an excellent in-depth tour of The Francisco Fort Museum, try your hand at a La Veta School of the Arts Class, or just enjoy watching the ancient beauty of a Tai Chi class held outside in the town park.
The kids will enjoy our new skateboard park and the little ones are excited to ride the miniature train that chugs through an eight acre backyard. Quaint Cuchara, complete with boardwalk and miniature golf, has several cafes, lodging, country style shopping, fine dining establishments, on the enchanting Cuchara River and offers a summer long series of concerts and weekend activities. Outfitters can plan any type of outdoor adventure you desire.
The locals you will encounter are an intriguing mix of ranchers, novelists, photographers, dot.commers, cowboys, poets, hippies, retirees and transplants from stressful big city life. Artist Studios abound creating every type of art: watercolors, weavings, pottery, stained glass, horseshoe accessories, and original batik fabrics. There are bronze makers, a manufacturer of custom log furniture, designers of leather fashions, and creators of hand-made guitars and flutes.
You will find that all of the local residents will enjoy taking the time to talk with you, most likely sitting outside, enjoying homemade ice cream. The only crowds you will encounter are those created by children, safely and happily playing, bike riding and skateboarding. Many have found this to be the perfect spot for reunions and retreats.
Animal lovers will be thrilled to visit local alpaca, llama, miniature horse and donkey farms, Bob the Bird Man, who rescues injured local species. There is also the herd of deer that live in town, not to mention the local bears snoozing in trees. Of course just about everyone owns a dog. Not many places will you see an SUV and horse parked side by side at the local saloon…
When was the last time you visited a valley where the heartbeat of activity was the library? That’s where everyone heads to find out what is happening locally or to attend library sponsored functions. Any book will be cheerfully ordered for you and there are dozens of classes offered: computer, writing and genealogy to name but a few. Personal computer use is free, as is the use of a “Towny Bike!”
For those with only a day to spare, we suggest a group bus tour. This could include a round of golf, shopping and a meal or perhaps a scenic mountain drive, picnic and a museum tour. An overnight would allow additional time for a hayride and barn barbecue or a leisurely stroll through town culminating with a fine dinner and theatrical production. Plan a weekend around our summer festivals, rodeo or Oktoberfest. There is plenty to do and lots of ways to relax. |
