In Northwestern Colorado you will find Walden, the county seat of Jackson County. North Park, as this 35 mile wide and 45 mile long basin is called, abounds in wildlife for photography or hunting moose, deer, elk, Pronghorn antelope, Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep, black bear and mountain lion.
This area, in the central Flyway and Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge, provides waterfowl an excellent place to nest. Peak migration is in May when you might see more than 5,000 ducks. Canadian Geese begin nesting in April. You will also see many Blue grouse, ptarmigan, upland game birds, sage grouse, Golden eagles, hawks and prairie falcon.
North Park has many streams and lakes. Fishing is excellent in both summer and winter. Ice fishing is a favorite winter sport, as well as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. North Park has the only State Forest, as well as National Forests, B.L.M., Wildlife Refuge, Sand Dunes and is on the Cache-La-Poudre – North Park Scenic Bypass.
Walden has one of the finest Pioneer museums in Colorado. The indoor swimming pool, built in 1992, is open year-round. Bowling, river-rafting, biking, horseback riding, hiking, golfing, fishing, hunting, bird watching and spectacular scenery all invite you to come and enjoy this unspoiled corner of NW Colorado. |
