Green Mountain Reservoir - Heeney Colorado Tourism

Green Mountain Reservoir - Heeney Colorado pdf download

One of Summit County’s best kept secrets. Surrounded by spectacular mountain views of the dramatic Gore Range and the Williams Peak Range.

In the summer it is a boater’s playground – fishing boats, jet skiing, water-skiing and pontoon cruising are all popular. Although trout fishing is very good, the reservoir is best known for its excellent kokanee salmon, some of the biggest in the state and snagging is permitted from September through December.

The winter offers huge lake trout to the patient ice fishermen. The Gold Medal Trout Waters of the Blue River, that feeds the reservoir, challenge fly-fishermen almost year-round.

The water levels fluctuate through the summer but boating is usually good June through September. The Heeney Marina offers a public boat ramp and dockside fuel at the north end of the reservoir. “Primitive” National Forest Service camping areas are available all along the east, north and southwest edges of the reservoir.

The small town of Heeney was created in the 1930s as an off-shoot of the dam construction. Today, the quiet community is home to about 100 full time residents and many part time residents.

The area offers access to several National Forest and Wilderness areas, including Cataract Lake’s numerous trailheads. Hiking/snow-shoeing is popular all year and in the fall hunters will find huge herds of elk and deer for memorable hunting experiences.
