Ouray Colorado Tourism

Pronounced “you-RAY,” Ouray and the surrounding county were named after a Ute Indian Chief whose people lived in the area until a treaty with the U.S. Government forced them to leave for less desirable land in Utah shortly after the town was incorporated in 1876.

Known as the “Gem of the Rockies” and the “Switzerland of America.” This National Historic District nestled in the spectacular San Juan Mountains is famous for its mining heritage, mineral hot springs and the incomparable beauty of its surroundings.

The famous Camp Bird Mine, just southwest of town, produced the highest rate of return of any mine in Colorado history — 26 million in gold between 1896 and 1910 alone.

There are literally thousands of abandoned mines within a 10 mile radius of Ouray. In town, the million gallon Hot Springs Pool, listed on the national historic register is open to the public year-round.

Some of Ouray’s biggest attractions are Box Canyon Falls, a 300 ft. waterfall through a narrow gorge accessed by a suspension bridge, and Box Canyon Park with walking trails and a picnic area.

About 12 miles north of town via Hwy. 550 is Ridgway State Recreation Area with 200 campsites and a 1,000 acre reservoir.

And if two nicknames aren’t enough, Ouray is also often called the “Jeep capital of the world” because of the extensive off-road trails allowing the exploration of ghost towns, abandoned mines and mountain peaks.

Jeeps are available for rental or guided tours. Winter only improves Ouray and the surrounding San Juans, bringing a chance to snowmobile, ice climb or cross-country ski mountain trails, or downhill ski at nearby Telluride.
