Historic Meeker is nestled in the White River Valley. Meeker was named after Nathan Meeker, an American Indian agent who was killed in September 1879 by the White River Utes in the last American Indian uprising of the West.

A small, friendly town, Meeker is the western gateway to the White River National Forest and the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. Visitors will enjoy the White River Museum and unique shops and restaurants.

Meeker hosts the Range Call 4th of July Celebration in July, Rio Blanco County Fair in August, the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials in September.

The Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials are held starting the Wednesday after Labor Day and with the largest purse in the sport, $20,000, the Classic attracts the top handlers and dogs from Canada and the United States. The event draws spectators from all corners of the country hoping to glimpse a tradition of the quickly disappearing American West.

Meeker has a wonderful nine-hole golf course just south of town. You never need a tee time except during tournaments. Heading east from Meeker on County Road 8, up the White River Valley is the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway offering spectacular scenery.

Small guest ranches along the river offer the weary traveler a relaxing atmosphere with plenty of recreational opportunities. Superb fishing, elk and deer hunting, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, photography, hiking, mountain biking and just relaxing away from the crowds are what this valley offers. Along with the White River, many lakes and streams along or just a few miles off of the Byway provide excellent fishing.
