Beautifully located at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers, Glenwood Springs is a favorite Colorado vacation destination.
Travelers approaching from the east are treated to spectacular views of the Colorado River as they drive through 2,000 ft. deep Glenwood Canyon over a dramatic 16 mile section of I-70. One of the most beautiful and expensive roadways ever built, the route features 40 bridges and viaducts and incorporates a bike path, many recreation and viewing sites, and raft and kayak drop points.
Glenwood Canyon is surrounded by some of the highest Rocky Mountain peaks, the White River National Forest, hot springs and geothermal steam caves. One of the canyon’s most beautiful and photographed features is Hanging Lake, accessible via a unique hiking path on the eastbound side of I-70.
While in Glenwood Springs, the recreational opportunities are endless. The area is a cycling paradise, with miles of paved trails and mountain bike terrain for all skill levels etched into the surrounding mountains. Rentals, repairs and maps are readily available.
Rafting down the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers is also a favorite; there are both white-knuckle and peaceful rides. Glenwood Springs is also home to the widely celebrated annual “Strawberry Days” (beginning the 3rd weekend in June). Now in its 114th year, the week-long event, which draws participants from around the state is Colorado’s oldest continuing civic celebration.
Nearby Sunlight Mountain Resort offers nearly 500 Acres and 67 trails for skiing and snowboarding, and miles of national forest for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, horseback riding, and more. |
